Green Tech or Green Menace? Google's AI Integration Skyrocket Emissions
Hello there,
Welcome back! We talked about Perplexity in our last newsletter. We looked at the problems they're facing.
Even though some people called them a "Bullshit Machine" and other mean things.
They're still doing great work. They haven't given up hope.
Perplexity has just made their Pro Search better.
Now, it can think through tough questions step-by-step. It can also do math problems using Wolfram Alpha.
These new features are available for Pro Search users.
We’re excited to announce an updated version of our Pro Search that can perform deeper research on more complex queries with multi-step reasoning, Wolfram|Alpha, and code execution.

🪰 Buzz Around AI
This news shocked me today. Who would have thought a big company like Google would increase its greenhouse gas emissions by almost 50% in just five years?
It's hard to believe, but it's true.
According to Google's 2024 Environmental Report, they released 14.3 million metric tons of carbon dioxide in 2023. That's 48% more than in 2019 and 13% more than in 2022.
It's a sad reality we have to face.
The increase in GHG is due to energy-intensive data centres supporting AI workloads.
A team from Hugging Face and Carnegie Mellon University did a study last December.
They researched how much energy different AI models use for various tasks.
These were some interesting facts they came up with:
If you create one image with AI it will use about the same amount of energy as charging your smartphone once.
Generating text with AI will be more energy-efficient as it takes only about 1/1000 (one-thousandth) of the energy needed for creating an image.
