🪰 Buzz Around AI

China is competing with Tesla in the robot industry.

At the 2024 World Robot Conference in Beijing, Chinese companies displayed 27 humanoid robots alongside Tesla's Optimus, showing China's determination to lead in this field.

Key Points:

  • Chinese tech companies introduced 27 humanoid robots at the event, with Tesla's Optimus being the only non-Chinese robot.

  • AGIBOT, a company started by a former Huawei employee, showcased robots using advanced AI for industrial and customer service tasks.

  • Other robots included Astribot's S1, which can write calligraphy and play musical instruments, and Galbot's robots designed for food delivery and retail.

  • Despite the impressive showcase, experts believe that high costs and technical challenges are still major obstacles for Chinese manufacturers.

Why It Matters:

China is working hard to catch up and possibly surpass the U.S. in the field of humanoid robots. With so many robots shown at the event, commercially available humanoid robots will likely arrive sooner than expected.

Grok-2 just got a serious upgrade, and I’m genuinely impressed.

xAI's Grok-2 and its mini version have made huge strides, doubling the speed of the mini model and boosting accuracy in both, just days after their beta release.

Key Points:

  • The Grok-2 mini is now twice as fast, thanks to a completely rewritten inference stack using SGLang. It’s like giving the mini a turbo boost!

  • Both versions of Grok-2 are also more accurate, with one xAI employee crediting this to reduce quantization error. It's the little details that count.

  • To top it off, Grok-2 models are now featured on the LMSYS Chatbot Arena leaderboard, enhancing transparency. The larger Grok-2 even snagged the #2 spot, outshining Claude's 3.5 Sonnet.

  • Grok-2 particularly shines in math, where it’s ranked #1, and it also performs exceptionally well in handling tough prompts, coding, and following instructions. This is cutting-edge stuff.

Why It Matters:

It’s incredible to think that xAI was founded just about 18 months ago, and now they’ve developed an LLM ranked third in the world. The whole AI community is buzzing, and it’s clear that Grok-2 isn’t just keeping up—it’s setting the pace. This kind of leap forward could push the entire industry to evolve even faster, and I can’t wait to see where it goes next.

♨️ What’s Hot In AI

The dream we all have like what if we can do different things with our phone is now becoming reality with the new Pixel 9.

It's hitting stores this week, and boy, is it packed with cool AI tricks!

Here's what it can do:

  1. Call Notes: It writes down important stuff from your calls. It tells people it's recording, though.

  2. Pixel Screenshots: It organizes pictures of important things like tickets. Makes them easy to find later.

  3. Pixel Studio: You can make funny stickers of your friends' faces.

  4. Gemini Live: You can talk to an AI voice. It's not super realistic, which might be good.

What makes it unique is Reimagine. It lets you add stuff to your photos really easily. For example, you could take a picture of yourself in your backyard, and then add a beautiful waterfall behind you.

In the past, changing photos like this took a lot of skill and time with programs like Photoshop. But Reimagine does it quickly and easily. You don't need to be a computer expert to use it.
